This is a request to the legislature to allow for funding that will attract and appropriately pay for the help that some of our most vulnerable population requires.
As Gov. Josh Shapiro and the State Legislature continue to negotiate the state 2023/24 budget, it is critical for them to consider adequately funding our citizens with developmental disabilities.
Services for the developmentally disabled are funded annually by the state budget. The staff that provide services to these individuals are paid based on formulas developed by the state human services dept. Currently these wages are inadequate to attract the levels of staffing necessary to provide the required services. This is unfair to these special needs people and their families. Staffing levels are critically low because of these wage realities.
I realize that there are countless demands on our political leaders relative to state budgeting negotiations but aren’t our special needs citizens worthy of a healthy and happy life that appropriate state funding can help provide? I call on Governor Shapiro, who is a compassionate man, to revisit his appropriations request to the legislature to allow for funding that will attract and appropriately pay for the help that some of our most vulnerable population requires.
