New studies show the promise of psychedelic drugs in treating psychiatric ailments, but they must be properly administered.

anyone with recent suicidal ideation or a history of behavioral health conditions such as bipolar disorder, personality disorders and severe substance use. People were even barred from participating if they had immediate family members with psychotic disorders.

Limiting participation is standard practice in research, but additional safeguards must be in place before the drugs are authorized for widespread use and accessible to those at high risk for dangerous side effects. As Alpert explained, “It would dishonor patients to provide treatments that have not been fully vetted scientifically and that are administered in settings that don’t have the necessary clinical rigor and expertise.

His worry, which I share, is that people suffering from mental health ailments will acquire psychedelics and think that taking the drugs themselves is sufficient. It is not.The psilocybin study required participants to undergo six to eight hours of preparatory sessions; a seven- to 10-hour dosing session under the supervision of two facilitators; and post-administration therapy to process the experience.

Alpert already knows patients who opted to try psychedelics obtained from friends in lieu of mental health treatment. “If somebody has serious depression, simply acquiring psychedelics as a form of mental health care is profoundly insufficient,” he said. These patients need a comprehensive evaluation and should be informed about the range of treatment options.

This is no different from any other form of medical care. No one would think it’s appropriate for patients with cancer to purchase their own chemotherapy drugs on the street to use without follow-up care. And no one would supportAdvertisementaround behavioral health. Mental health conditions should be treated no differently from physical ailments, with evidence-based care that is vetted through the scientific and regulatory processes.
