'Enjoy and love yourself; we want you to prepare yourselves for a new world.'
In this expressive op-ed, poet Nikki Giovanni explains that these days belong to the youth of America.
What I remember most about growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee, in my teen years is my grandmother’s phone number: 3-1593. It was before the two-digit number, certainly before the 800 gave you a free long distance. Most phones had a party line, which relied on the discretion of neighbors for privacy. When the line was engaged, anyone who shared that line could listen in — but I don’t think anyone listened in.
It was quite a thing when we got our own single line. I lived with my grandmother and grandpapa because my father and mother fought a lot and argued a lot and it got to be more than I knew what to do about it. Of course, there was nothing I could do about it but I was too young to do anything but dream it would stop. The advantage of getting older is that you can keep on dreaming, and if you had any talent or anything like that you could spend your time away from reality.
I liked to read. There was never a book I found that I didn’t love. And I liked television. Most young folk don’t remember “The Lone Ranger,” and it took me the longest to understand that the ranger was alone. I still don’t know why. Maybe the Native Americans killed the other ones because they called them names or something, but when there are problems at home being alone only makes sense even if you are not a ranger.
The best thing about my generation is that we had Hope. We had to believe things would get better...that one day there would be noand signs like that. We marched and prayed…we stood and were buried. But we didn’t look back. We were not alone in our fear because there was fear closer and there was fear further. We knew at midnight white men in white robes with white hoods could come to knock the doors to our homes down.
