PLNU sends 16 hitters to plate in 11-run third inning of PacWest Tournament opener, paving way for 14-3 win over Holy Names; Sea Lions meet Azusa Pacific next
Point Loma Nazarene led the PacWest in scoring this season, so it’s no surprise the Sea Lions can put runs on the scoreboard.PLNU nearly batted around twice in the third inning of Wednesday’s PacWest Tournament opener against Holy Names, sending 16 batters to the plate.The Sea Lions produced 10 hits — Hunter Otjen, Scott Anderson and Seth Ryberg had two hits apiece in the innings — and 11 runs, propelling PLNU to a 14-3 victory at Fresno Pacific’s FPU Diamond.
“I don’t think they were jitters , but it just took us a second to get in our groove offensively,” said Otjen, who was 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. “I was proud of the way we kept our cool and kept doing our thing and the result was awesome.The victory advanced the top-seeded Sea Lions to Thursday’s winners bracket game at 3 p.m. against second-seeded Azusa Pacific , which defeated Fresno Pacific 6-4 in Wednesday’s late game.
A two-run homer by Otjen in the sixth inning and a solo shot by teammate D Garcia completed the scoring for PLNU, which collected 18 hits in the game.
