Polish opposition leader and former president of the European Council Donald Tusk is calling for a full investigation into reports that Pegasus spyware was used against three opposition figures.

Describing the situation as"the biggest and deepest crisis of democracy after 1989", he is calling for the creation of a commission in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, to examine the use of the software, developed by Israel's NSO and sold to governments around the world.

"We will request the establishment of an investigative committee in the Sejm. It is also in the interest of all other political forces.I don’t think anyone wants to be eavesdropped on by the authorities with impunity," he said at a press conference. "A motion for an investigative committee, if this authority has nothing to hide, should be supported not only by opposition clubs, but also by politicians cooperating with [Law and Justice Party] PiS."

The use of the software in Poland was revealed through a joint investigation by the Associated Press and the University of Toronto’s nonprofit research facility Citizen Lab. The victims have been named as opposition senator Krzysztof Brejza, who coordinated the 2019 election campaign, along with lawyer Roman Giertych, who represented opposition party Civic Platform in a number of legal cases, and prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek, who has fought for the independence of the judiciary to be retained.
