This year\u0027s firearms amnesty period ran from March 20 to April 9.

“The potential for these firearms to be lost or stolen and end up in the hands of those who may use them in unlawful offences no longer exists,” Saskatchewan RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Udey said in a prepared statement.— the first after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic — collected 241 firearms provincewide. In 2019, 283 firearms were turned in, and in 2018, 369 were collected.

Although the amnesty period has ended, people who want to turn in an unwanted firearm can still contact police to surrender it. Someone with a firearm they don’t want or use may also not have proper training in safe handling or storage, he said. In other cases, someone may have had legitimate use for a firearm in the past, such as for hunting, but have reached a stage of life when they don’t want it and may not know the processes for safely selling it.
