Officers from a police task force seized more than 200 allegedly stolen catalytic converters, along with about $260,000 in cash and guns as they simultaneously raided two Oakland locations, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday.
The seizures and arrests Friday morning by the Alameda County Regional Auto Theft Taskforce —composed of members from the CHP, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Oakland Police Department and Alameda County Probation Department — resulted from an investigation that started in mid-2022 into “a prolific catalytic converter fencing operation and crew responsible for thefts throughout the Bay Area,” the CHP said.
Officers found about 240 catalytic converters, three guns — including two that were allegedly stolen — along with the cash and other allegedly stolen property including a vehicle, police said. Catalytic converters seized June 9, 2023 by police after the Alameda County Regional Auto Theft Taskforce executed search warrants at two Oakland sites as part of a long-term investigation into an alleged Bay Area-wide catalytic converter theft and fencing operation. Six people were arrested. Police said they found 240 stolen catalytic converters.
