ICYMI: Police seize over a million illegal cigarettes, Regina men charged
The charges stem from an investigation that began in early February, and resulted in arrests on March 17, according to a Monday news release from the Regina Police Service .It was carried out by the RPS Online/Stolen Property Unit, with assistance from other RPS investigative units, patrol members, and provincial tobacco enforcement members, the release states.
Searches were done on an apartment, two storage lockers, a motor home and three vehicles. In all, there were just over 133 cases of illegal cigarettes recovered and seized, according to police. The men, both listed as being from Regina, were charged under the Criminal Code, as well as the province’s Tobacco Act, according to the release.
It goes on to state: “the penalty under the Tobacco Act is a fine, calculated on the total amount of illegal tobacco. In this case, the fine is estimated to be just over $648,000.”The news seems to be flying at us faster all the time. From COVID-19 updates to politics and crime and everything in between, it can be hard to keep up.
