They called it a hyperkinetic disease of infancy, and it was the first recorded instance of what’s now called ADHD. The characteristics defining this hyperkinetic disease — inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity — are the same as ADHD’s three main symptoms.
The term"hyperkinetic impulse disorder" was coined in 1957, because research was showing"you couldn't always demonstrate damage," said Arnold, the psychiatry researcher from Ohio State University.
