State Rep. Darrin Madison, D-Milwaukee, is half-right on his claim about the Wisconsin GOP’s cash bail bill.

If Wisconsin voters OK a cash bail amendment this April, judges would be able to take into account a wider variety of conditions for setting bail for certain defendants.

But Madison’s point about witnesses misleads, making an example out of"spectating" violence that is, in itself, a crime in current state statute.Spurred by the 2021 tragedy at the Waukesha Christmas Parade, where a man free on $1,000 bail in a felony domestic case drove his SUV through the crowd and killed six people, lawmakers have called for action to reform the state’s bail system.State lawmakers have pushed forward a constitutional amendment that would allow Wisconsin judges to.

Madison wrote:"While testified that ‘this is very narrowly focused on violent crime,’ on the contrary, a large quantity of people who are accused of crimes, including anyone who even witnesses certain crimes, could now be detained and subject to bail."
