Our restaurant critic Alison Cook is returning to full reviews this week. We are asking...
To star or not to star, that is the question — regarding the real-deal, warts-and-all, three-or-more visit restaurant reviewsI hate stars, as I have complained over the years to my editors. I find them reductive, inadequate to express the very particular joys, sorrows and appeal of an individual restaurant. I loathe the way we of the Yelp 5-Star era use them as shortcuts to decision-making, whether it be whether to try a restaurant out or to read the review in the first place.
Nothing in the restaurant world is as cut and dried as a star system would have you believe. And no matter what criteria you try to build into your system, at this point readers are going to apply the Yelp standards to your rankings, anyway. Want to employ one star to indicate “a good restaurant that we recommend?” Plenty of folks will conclude that single, respectable star is a Yelpian diss of monumental proportion. It's a losing battle.
I wonder, as I argue the question back and forth with my Chronicle colleagues, what our readers think. Do stars help you decide where to spend your money, or are you more likely to be guided by the whole, nuanced review? Do you love stars or hate them? Chime in, because we’ll be tracking whether there’s strong demand for a star system as we prepare to launch our first review this week.
