San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich signals to players during the first half of an NBA basketball game against the Sacramento Kings, Thursday, March 3, 2022, in San Antonio. SAN ANTONIO – Spurs coach Gregg Popovich made history Monday night, pulling into a tie with Don Nelson for the most regular season wins in NBA history.
Popovich showed no emotion as the final seconds ticked off. He tried to get off the court with just a wave to the Los Angeles coaching staff, but Lakers coach Frank Vogel and assistant David Fizdale rushed over to congratulate him. The Spurs broke open a close game with an 11-2 run midway through the fourth quarter that Josh Richardson capped with a 3-pointer that gave them a 108-99 lead and forced a Lakers timeout with 6:58 remaining. But the Lakers fought back to pull within 108-105 on a 3-point shot by Talen Horton-Tucker with 5:39 left.
Starting in place of Vassell, Richardson finished with 18 points, his high since coming to the Spurs in a trade deadline deal that sent Derrick White to Boston on Feb. 10.
