With hindsight, nobody would have chosen September 2019 as the time to commence production of a very expensive, very complex electric car. Given, y’know, the minor inconveniences of a global pandemic and huge supply chain issues that have engulfed the industry since. But seemingly it’ll take more than a once-in-a-generation health crisis to hold back Porsche, as this week it’s made the 100,000th Taycan.
Even in normal times , that would be a significant achievement for a car that kicks off at £75k in the UK. But for an electric Porsche - bringing together a badge with stacks of combustion history and fairly new tech with some infrastructure issues - it seems a really big deal. Any reservations that there may have been about Porsche taking on an electric car have been cast aside by the popularity.
The milestone car, a Neptune Blue Turbo S, is actually heading here, having been completed on Monday. Behind the US and China, the UK is the Taycan’s third biggest market. To mark the occasion, Porsche has tracked down a few Taycan owners that have passed 100,000 of their own - kilometres driven, that is. One French owner, Jean-Hubert Revolon, has already accrued 188,000km since just August 2020, which is some going.
With so many already having been sold, there are plenty of secondhand Taycans around for buyers unwilling to wait. And, well, it’d be rude not to look on such a special occasion. Don’t expect any bargains - the way the world is means the cheapest on PH is £85k - but there are undoubtedly some interesting cars out there. A
