A powerful earthquake struck Morocco late Friday, killing hundreds of people and damaging buildings in the historic city of Marrakech and elsewhere.

Initial reports suggested that damage and deaths were severe throughout the Marrakech-Safi region, which is made up of a mixture of cities, small towns and open land, with a population of 4.5 million, according to state figures. In 1960, a magnitude 5.8 temblor struck near the Moroccan city of Agadir and caused thousands of deaths.
