Escalating conflict has left many Ukrainian Americans in Chicago fearful for relatives and friends overseas.

“I am very worried,” said Vera Eliashevsky, co-chair of the Kyiv committee of Sister Cities Chicago International, who is concerned for her family members and friends in Ukraine. “However, let’s remember … for Ukrainians, this Russian aggression is not new. They’re strong. They’re going to fight for their country to be a sovereign country, a democratic country.”

“Of course I am worried about my country, because I am Ukrainian from the bottom of my heart,” she said. “I pray every day and every night.” The faithful at St. Joseph the Betrothed Ukrainian Catholic Church on the Northwest Side prayed for their homeland during a service Wednesday morning. Markarova also served as the keynote speaker Saturday at a Ukrainian Unity Day commemoration, an annual celebration of the nation’s independence, at the Ukrainian Cultural Center.

As for Hayda, the seminarian said he intends to travel toLondon for the time being, where he can still attend classes remotely and be a quick plane ride from Ukraine for when “the situation clears up.”
