So romantic!
Appearing on stage at the UN General Assembly – which gathered in New York to mark the life and legacy of former South African leader, Nelson Mandela – the Duke of Sussex gave a key-note, referencing his and Meghan's 2019 visit to Africa, which later turned out to be their last trip as senior working members of the Royal Family.
"Since I first visited Africa at 13 years old, I’ve always found hope on the continent," the 37-year-old royal said."In fact, for most of my life, it has been my lifeline. A place where I found peace and healing time and time again." "[It's] where I knew I’d found a soulmate in my wife," he added, pointing out that Africa holds a dear place in his heart due to the deep connection that his late mother had with the continent.
"It’s where I felt closest to my mother and sought solace after she died," Harry noted, referencing a photo of Princess Diana and Nelson Mandela that was taken in Cape Town in 1997 just months before her tragic death."When I first looked at the photo, straight away what jumped out was the joy on my mother’s face, playfulness, cheekiness even," he told the crowd."The pure delight in being in communion with another soul so dedicated to serving humanity.
He went on:"And then I looked at Mandela. He was a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders... A man who had lost 27 years with his friends and family that he’d never get back. 27 years. Yet in that photo, and so many others, he is still beaming, still able to see the goodness in humanity, still buoyant with a beautiful spirit that lifted everyone around him.
