Supporters of Julian Assange congregated outside of Britain's High Court ahead of an appeals trial that could undo a judge's prior decision to deny Assange's extradition to the U.S. If extradited, Assange would face espionage charges. Read more:

Speaking outside the court, Moris said she was"very concerned for Julian's health," the Associated Press reported."It is completely unthinkable that the U.K. courts could agree to this.

Stella Moris, partner of Julian Assange, speaks outside the Royal Courts of Justice during an appeal hearing for his extradition to the United States on October 27, 2021 in London, England.During proceedings, James Lewis, a lawyer acting for the U.S. government, argued that Baraitser had made a mistake in her previous ruling. Lewis said that a promise had been made for Assange to face any possible jail time in his home nation of Australia and not in severe conditions in a U.S. prison.

"Once there is an assurance of appropriate medical care, once it is clear he will be repatriated to Australia to serve any sentence, then we can safely say the district judge would not have decided the relevant question in the way that she did," Lewis said, via Sky News. "It is a damning indictment that nearly 20 years on, virtually no one responsible for alleged US war crimes committed in the course of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars has been held accountable, let alone prosecuted, and yet a publisher who exposed such crimes is potentially facing a lifetime in jail," Callamard said in a statement.

Allegation of CIA 'murder' plot is game-changer in Assange extradition hearing, fiancee saysAllegation of CIA 'murder' plot is game-changer in Assange extradition hearing, fiancee saysThe partner of Julian Assange said on Monday a media report that the CIA had plotted to kill or kidnap the WikiLeaks founder was a game-changer in his fight against extradition from Britain to the United States. U.S. authorities will this week begin their appeal against a British judge's refusal to extradite Assange - who is wanted on 18 criminal charges including breaking a spying law - because his mental health problems meant he would be at risk of suicide. Last month, Yahoo News reported CIA officials had drawn up options for former U.S. President Donald Trump's administration for dealing with Assange while he was holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, including assassinating or kidnapping him.
