Testimony expressed a need for increased funds while some urged no additional funding for administration.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Facing a $17 million budget deficit, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is prepared to cut nearly 90 staffing positions. These cuts along with others will have a large ripple effect on the district including an increase in the student to teacher ratio. Senate Bill 52 might be able to dampen some of those impacts as it proposes to increase the base student allocation by $1000.
From the interior, the committee heard support from members of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Melissa Burnett, a member of the FNSBSD school board, spoke in support of the bill. Burnett said this year the school district was facing a lot of staffing cuts on top of closing 3 schools already. Burnett also said that if the situation continues, “teachers will continue to leave.” Her comments reflected the high rate of turn over the district is facing as teachers resign from their positions.
Among those in opposition to the bill was Kelly Nash. “We have propaganda in every single school,” said Nash. She claimed there are teachers in the schools that only use the classroom to push political beliefs. Others that spoke against the bill cited performance issues faced by schools under the current funding levels.
