The first of six public hearings on a proposed $9 to $23 toll to drive south of 60th street in Manhattan was Thursday night

But the plan, which could charge between $9 and $23 to drive in the central business district also got some endorsements from Jerseyans fed up with traffic and pollution.

“Residents of Hudson County pay a burdensome tax, we suffer from some of the worst air quality, rated an F, with that context, I express full support for congestion pricing,” Lee said, adding a condition to his support. Steve Carrellas, National Motorists Association state policy director, who was the 117th registered speaker said the concept was originally called value pricing by federal officials for plans that charged tolls for using low traffic express lanes.

New Yorkers were far tougher on the plan, leveling criticism that echoed their New Jersey counterparts. Some speakers demanded a federal audit of the MTA before providing additional funding from congestion pricing. “It will be onerous and cruel for seniors and the disabled who are below 60th street. My husband is one of them” said Dale Posey who said they rode the subway until a medical episode happened. “We had to become drivers.”

Others such as Manhattan resident Barek Friedman voiced support for a congestion fee with no exemptions except for transit buses.
