Purdue University Northwest Chancellor Thomas Keon has been formally reprimanded by the Purdue Board of Trustees after he made a racist remark at a graduation ceremony nearly two weeks ago, the board announced Thursday.

The reprimand comes after “each member of the Purdue Board had an opportunity to review the entirety of the December 10 commencement at Purdue University Northwest,” Purdue University West Lafayette spokesman Tim Doty wrote in an email.

“Seventy percent of the PNW Faculty believe he should be fired. How can they be our Board of Trustees if they’re so incapable of representing us? It proves how out-of-touch they are with academia.” “The Board of Trustees does not seem to understand the gravity of the situation,” she said. “This was not an incidental comment. It is part of a pattern that undermines the university’s ability to offer students a safe learning space, and research shows that learning is inhibited in educational institutions that are not culturally responsive and sustaining, which is academic speak for welcoming and affirming.
