There is a slim chance that there was no significant impact on overall media and tech results from the macroeconomic factors at play such as red-hot inflation and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While every company was impacted differently and to varying degrees, one of the most obvious effects was likely on spending, and specifically, advertising spending.

Overall, global ad spend is still projected to grow 9% year-over-year to $682 billion, according to public relations firm. As for Q1 ad spend, the Winter Beijing Olympics and Paralympics likely provided a boost to ad spend but could be offset by the COVID lockdown in some European and South American countries during the quarter.

Perhaps more closely watched will be Meta. The tech company’s stock was absolutely pummeled in January following its. Expectations are low for Meta, and if it can’t exceed the low bar its set for itself, a mass exodus of investors may be on the horizon.
