A 3.4-magnitude earthquake was reported in San Benito County Sunday night.

TRES PINOS — A 3.4-magnitude earthquake was reported in San Benito County Sunday night, government seismologists reported.

The earthquake occurred at 8:47 p.m. on Sunday and appeared to be in a relatively sparsely populated area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter of the quake was about 4.5 miles southwest of Tres Pinos. About 445 people lived in Tres Pinos as of 2021, the state Finance Department estimated.

The quake was also located about nine miles southeast of Hollister, which is the administrative center of San Benito County.A seismic event of this size rarely produces significant damage and is often not widely felt. People from as far away as Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County and the Monterey Bay coastline near Marina reported feeling the quake, according to the U.S.G.S.
