In his first media interview, Trump’s point man on 5G talks about the White House’s plans to counter China, disappointment with the U.K. and why a slower rollout could be better
Blair, a top security adviser to Trump chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, has already spent years deeply entangled in White House politics, including Trump’s high-profile dealings with Ukraine in 2019. He refused to comply with House Democrats’ subpoena to testify in their impeachment inquiry last year and was among figures whom top Senate Democrats had hoped to call among witnesses in this year’s Senate impeachment trial.
Blair recently spoke to POLITICO’s John Hendel and Mike Farrell in his West Wing office about how he’s thinking through his first weeks on the job, what messages he wants to take abroad and the biggest challenge in persuade America’s allies to follow Trump’s lead. Why doesn’t the U.S. have its own Huawei, and is there anything the government can do to address that? Here in the United States, we’ve got 5G rolling out across the country.
If you read through the different criteria, it’s obvious that they were written with a particular country in mind. There are multiple security-related criteria. The implementation of those rules at the national level is going to determine how protected these countries’ systems are. My role is more the international face, to go out and talk to other countries, to be a focal point for businesses, so that if they’re interested in where the president is on something internationally, they know who to turn to. I’m in the process of learning as much as I can about what’s already been done over the last three years within the government.
But we also care deeply about keeping this country safe, and there’s some important DOD assets in that area. And we’re working closely with DOD to figure out how we can both achieve what they need to keep us safe, and then at the same time, continue to stimulate the domestic 5G ecosystem. How much is the U.K.’s decision to allow some limited Huawei involvement in their 5G network a setback for the U.S.?It’s not.
