Adam Schiff is proving to be a fundraising machine in the race to succeed Dianne Feinstein in the U.S. Senate, but polls show strong support for Democratic rivals Katie Porter and Barbara Lee.
New fundraising reports in the race for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s U.S. Senate seat show Rep. Adam Schiff widening his money advantage but not having much to show for it in the latest polls of prospective voters — one of which puts his chief rival Rep. Katie Porter on top.Schiff, of Burbank, hauled in $8.2 million for the second quarter that ended June 30. He spent $3.3 million and has an eye-popping $29 million left in his war chest.
“His two opponents are catching or even surpassing him in the polls,” Kousser said. “That’s a warning sign for anyone who thinks fundraising alone will dictate this race.” Feinstein, a former San Francisco supervisor and mayor who turned 90 last month, is the oldest member in the Senate, where she has represented California for more than 30 years and serves on the key Judiciary, Appropriations and Intelligence committees.
Schiff’s campaign boasted he “smashed records” and showed strong grassroots support in the second quarter, with 144,000 donors making more than 233,000 contributions in every California county and U.S. state. All but 2% of Schiff’s donations, his campaign said, were less than $200 with an average of $34 and no corporate political action committee contributions.
But recent polling showed Porter, Lee, and even a leading Republican are credible threats to emerge as the top two in deeply Democratic California’s jungle primary and advance to the November 2024 runoff. The PPIC, which surveyed 1,092 California likely voters June 7-29 in English and Spanish with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points, is particularly encouraging for Porter.
