A former child actor on 'Kids Incorporated' where Fergie and Jennifer Love Hewitt got their start, Patterson has long forged his own path. He appears at Arena
Rahsaan Patterson performs at the 4th Annual Jazz Spectacular at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on June 19, 2022 in Sterling Heights, Michigan.Twenty-five years ago, Rahsaan Patterson released his self-titled debut album on MCA Records. A former child performer who got his start on the musical children’s TV show “Kids Incorporated” , Patterson grew up to be a songwriter and backup singer, collaborating with such artists as Brandy, Tevin Campbell, and Ray J.
“That time was exceptional,” says the New York native, 48, on the phone from LA. “The music industry was very different than it is now. The support was certainly present in my experience, having record companies interested in my work and me as a songwriter and solo artist. The opportunities that I had to write and sing on other artists’ albums assisted in me garnering the interest that I did from labels and publishers at the time, and further exposed my talent to the industry overall.
His album came out right smack in the middle of the neo-soul craze, when the music press began hyping up such artists as D’Angelo, Maxwell, and Dallas’s own Erykah Badu as alternative R&B outlaws whose music was a throwback to the smart, smooth ‘70s sounds of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Since Patterson performed tunes that could be funky one minute and slow & suave the next, he was also seen as part of the neo-soul party.
MCA, who didn’t think Patterson’s debut had a good first single, even paired the singer with hip-hop band The Roots for a song that could get heavy airplay. Says Patterson, “To be quite honest, the song that we recorded and the track that was laid by Questlove and The Roots was absolutely in the vein of neo-soul and sounded very much like an old Al Green song. But that was not where I was coming from.
After making two albums that were more successful critically than commercially, MCA dropped Patterson. He went on to release albums on Artistry Music, an independent label he co-founded. When he released his third album “After Hours” in 2004, listeners thought he was going in a different direction musically. But he was still on the same path he’s always been.
