and too big for the venue, Jacob deGrom tried a get-me-over fastball to make up for the errant one that preceded it.

Chances are Omar will be talking about that clout long after everyone else forgets where they were for. But the rest of it was memorable, at least for the Rangers’ purposes. DeGrom impressed the Rangers’ general manager by using all four of his pinpoint pitches to collect five strikeouts without a walk. It was vintage deGrom: 24 pitches, 20 strikes. He was so efficient, he remained on the mound for a fourth out in the second inning in order to work his pitch count a little closer to the 35 originally scheduled for his first game action of camp.

Pitchers come in all shapes and sizes, but deGrom is a study. Listed at 6-4, 180, he somehow seems longer and leaner, like one of those inflatable tube-men rolling up and down in used car lots. His long arms flap out-of-tune with his gait. All things considered, it’s not what you’d call an athletic look.Yes, it does. Other pitchers may have deGrom’s stuff, but few, if any, possess his command. The catcher’s glove almost never moves. His competitive nature showed Monday, too.
