Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer pitches in the bullpen during a team workout at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in preparation for Game 1 of an American League Divisional Series against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, Oct. 6, in Baltimore.Manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday morning that a combination of factors led to Scherzer being left off the roster for the time being. He did say Scherzer could be added if the Rangers have an injury to one of their 13 pitchers.
The only change the Rangers made to their 13-player, 13-pitcher roster for the Division Series was to swap out lefty Cody Bradford for right-handed Grant Anderson, who had been added for the Wild Card Series.Baltimore also made a key pitching omission from its roster: Lefty starter John Means. Manager Brandon Hyde said Means, who would have likely started Game 3, was dealing with a bit of elbow soreness and the club opted to rest him.
Scherzer threw two innings of a simulated game on Friday and felt good about his results against hitters Austin Hedges, Mitch Garver, Ezequiel Duran and Josh Smith. But he also added that recovery was the key. “I’m learning what my shoulder can and can’t do,” Scherzer said Friday after his outing. “So much of this battle getting back has been in the recovery process. It was a positive sign to go out there and face hitters, but I’ve got to recover. As much as I feel good right now, I know I’ve got to pump the brakes a little bit to see how the body responds. It might feel good now, but in a couple of hours or overnight, it might tighten up.”. As of 5 p.m.
