Arguably the top pitcher on the market joined Bob Melvin’s Giants clubhouse late in spring training. His new boss in San Francisco has also outfitted his homecoming with a Gold Glove third baseman, an international superstar and a right-handed slugger who’s unafraid of cavernous Oracle Park. Not a bad roster for Melvin’s upcoming return to the Bay Area. Then again, the toys the 62-year-old skipper left behind in San Diego still have some shine to them.
Five days later, King walked a career-high seven batters while allowing two runs in four innings. “I don't think I ever found a rhythm,” King said afterward. “I was searching mechanically out there. … It's good that we put up 12 runs because I was lucky to get out of there with only two.” King stranded his first four walks.
