Houston Texans wide receiver Chris Conley reaches out to make a catch during an NFL training camp Saturday, July 30, 2022, in Houston.Justin Britt shows up to the team facility early so he has time to warm up his knees.
Britt is one of the players the Houston coaching staff is protecting with caution during training camp. Britt, defensive end Jonathan Greenard , linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill and rookie cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. all rotated intoafter sitting out those same drills during OTAs while rehabbing their injuries, and while their plays were limited, their collective return to action was promising with the Sept. 11 season opener against the Colts still over a month away.
“All those guys are not necessarily on a play count, but we have a plan as far as when we’re going to let them rest a little bit,” Smith said. “We’re different with Justin Britt out there. It all starts with our center. He does an awful lot for our team. He’s a good player. But, again, our offense is a lot better with Justin out there.”
An inefficient 2021 offensive line was also inconsistent with 10 different starting configurations, and Britt, who missed six games with his knee injury, was only a part of five of them. Scott Quessenberry, who signed a one-year deal with Houston after four reserve seasons with the Chargers, is an available backup. Jimmy Morrissey also re-signed with the Texans after joining the franchise as an undrafted rookie last season and started in four games.
“Offseason has been real beneficial,” Britt said. “Our athletic training staff, strength staff here, they gave me all the tools and they gave me the chance to come out here and be able to do this for however long I want to.”
