In a recent conversation with Vogue, Sean Baker elaborated on the suburban fantasies of Red Rocket, his ongoing fascination with hidden, American landscapes, and how home movies and the porn industry have inspired his work.
has a strong attachment to a particular setting and landscape—in this case, the industrial suburbs of Texas City, Texas. As a Houston suburbanite, I really appreciated how it presented an intimate anthropology of Texan vernacular culture, down to the use of local images like Donut Hole, Big Red cola, and Luby’s cafeteria.
How do you think filming in a place like Texas City from an outsider or tourist’s sensibility allows you to view it in a way that a local could not? All these places are teeming with life. Honestly, I fall in love with the locations I shoot in, to the point where I am literally about to move there. And I’m not joking. It’s usually me saying to Samantha [Quan], my wife and one of the producers of my films: “I’m ready to move to Galveston. Are you ready?” And she says, “Are you kidding me?” You know what it is? It’s about bonding with people who live in the area.
