The new pitch clock rule is already rearing its head during the first days of spring training.
Cal Conley, a 23-year-old shortstop in the Braves’ organization, did not get set in the box within the given eight-second time frame batters receive following a pitcher getting ready to pitch. Per the newly-implemented rules, this means an automatic strike is granted to the pitcher.
Conley said the violation came via confusion, as he didn’t think the pitcher or catcher was set and ready to go.. “I was looking down at the catcher as he was standing up. Not really sure if the pitcher was ready to go, catcher definitely wasn’t.” But clearly, as shown on Saturday, the rule changes will have just as much impact on hitters—three violations were called on batters in the Atlanta-Boston game and none on pitchers.
