Based on Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestselling novel of the same name, this story immediately hooks its audience from scene one of the first episode. No spoilers here as. From the moment a close-up of Witherspoon’s bewildered face enters frame, you’re absolutely hooked. Perfectly cast as Type-A-perfectionist, Elena Richardson, the show opens with her as she stands on the street in front of her enormous house as it burns to the ground.
Do-gooder Elena takes on Mia and her daughter as a sort of side project but as we come to learn, she has enough problems of her own to contend with. Perhaps to distract herself from the serious issues surfacing with her troubled teenage daughter, Elena feels good helping the homeless mother and daughter but her help is neither wanted nor appreciated by Mia.
