Meanwhile, the disposal of treated water remains controversial as it has angered China and raised concerns from other countries. Even the Japanese people have not fully accepted it, especially the fishing community. Japanese fishermen are worried that the release of treated water will undo their years of effort to restore the reputation of Japanese seafood after the 2011 tsunami disaster.
During his visit to Fukushima, Kishida inspected wastewater filtering and dilution facilities. He urged the managers of the Fukushima nuclear power plant to prioritize safety in the discharge of treated water and help prevent damage to the reputation of local fisheries. The operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co. , has stated that hazardous radioactive elements have been filtered and the discharged water is now safe according to the International Atomic Energy Agency . The IAEA's latest report from July stated that TEPCO's plan, if strictly implemented, would have negligible impact on the environment and human health. Therefore, the IAEA has encouraged Japan to proceed with the plan.
