“It was definitely a shock,” Martinez said. “I think that situation really brought us together as a team. In practice, in games, in the locker room, you could just tell that there was a closeness to the team now that one of our brothers wasn’t able to play. So him just being on the sideline at our games, it just pushed us to play harder and chase after the state championship even more.”
“Right now, we’re all excited,” Martinez said. “We feel like we’ve played the top competition from around the area and we just feel ready to attack these playoffs. We know it’s gonna be a tough road, but we feel like we have the talent and the skills to get to another state championship.” The duo of Fox and Martinez was not the backcourt Bernal envisioned leading the scoring charge for Antonian at the beginning of the year, but the combination proved instrumental in propelling the Apaches to their fifth consecutive 30-win season.
