'We just keep going. Donors have been so wonderful,' she said. 'We're asking the public to get us over the finish line.'
As society has evolved in its treatment and support of adults with intellectual and developmental differences, so has Pine Castle. Now the goal is integrating them into society as much as possible, primarily through employment.Currently about 20 clients work in the community at businesses such as Publix, the federal courthouse, Jacksonville University and the Holland & Knight law firm. The more clients spend time working off campus, the more new clients can be accepted.
"We just keep going. Donors have been so wonderful," she said."We're asking the public to get us over the finish line.""We always have to be moving forward," she said, with a"commitment to continuing improvement, hopefully for 70 more years and beyond."Houpert, a public school teacher, said the hardest part of supporting Pine Castle"is making people aware of what we do.
When he first visited, he"was attracted and astounded by what I saw, the people I met," he said."They touched a chord with me."The best part is"seeing continuity in the mission and reflection of so many consumers, so many who have been there," he said."For the last two years, I watched how they managed through COVID-19, emerged stronger than ever, with so many projects in the works.
