Rep. ByronDonalds gears up for race against RepStefanik for House GOP conference chair
Stefanik’s announcement came shortly after news broke that Donalds, one of two black GOP members in the House, would make his bid official during an event Thursday evening.The New York Republican asserted that she has locked down key support, including members of House GOP leadership, in her push to retain the position, which is tasked with helping lead messaging efforts. But Donalds said his conversations with members are going well and not to count him out of the race just yet.
“And I think that especially when you have the responsibility to govern, it's going to be incredibly important that we're very clear about what House Republicans stand for and focus. So for me, it's just about being very clear about that,” he added. “I think that the members, if you ask them, they trust my ability to do that."
Stefanik’s team said it has the numbers needed to win what would be the No. 4 position in House GOP leadership if the party flips the lower chamber in November.
