Alabama state representative Mike Shaw says one of those bills will be crafted to increase the punishment for false reporting.. The 26 year old reported falling victim to a kidnapping only to admit later to law enforcement that it was a lie.“To me when you create that public alarm when you create that public expense when you kind of violate the trust of the community... That rises to the level of a felony," said Representative Shaw.
The crime of false reporting currently stands as a misdemeanor and holds a punishment of up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $6,000.Representative Shaw says he plans work diligently in next years session to make sure that happens. He believes Russel's lie wasted local and national law enforcement resources that could have been used in other cases.
"Up in Birmingham we had a fire fighter who was shot while on duty during this and this took the attention away from that. We didn’t have people working on that we had people from all levels of government trying to do what’s right and help this person," said Representative Shaw, "I think that highlights what one of the issues is. Law enforcement takes these situations seriously this is what they do... And in this case they were chasing something that didn’t happen.
He does not want the increase in punishment to scare the community from reporting real crimes or emergencies.
