Tenure is an indefinite employment contract for faculty who show a high level of performance for research and teaching. Tenured faculty can still be fired for cause, such as sexual harassment or poor job performance. Its purpose is to give researchers more leeway to follow their ideas, insulating them from university or political pressure.
Adam Kissel, with the Heritage Foundation — an influential conservative think tank — said tenure is “no longer appropriate” today because professors have “abandoned the intellectual humility” of scholars and instead embraced the “hubris” of activists.
Under state law, faculty already undergo tenure reviews at least every six years, and representatives from several of the large university systems in the state testified they undergo performance reviews more frequently, as often as annually. They said that tenured faculty aren’t guaranteed jobs for life if they’re not doing the work.“People know when folks are not doing what they should be doing.
