Enemy of My Enemy found Russian-aligned social media accounts have engaged in online campaigns to shape perception of the war in Ukraine.

The report includes research by the U of R’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Data and Conflict , of which McQuinn is the co-director, not-for-profit organization Digital Public Square and the University of Maryland.

Themes in that messaging include ideas that “Canada’s foreign policy is controlled by Ukrainian Canadians;” “Russia is de-Nazifying Ukraine;” western support for Ukraine will cause “nuclear Armageddon;” and Canadians sanctions are causing inflation, rising energy costs and global food shortages.Article content

Average Canadians, defined in the data set as a Twitter account with a follower count below the average in of around 1,300, made up the “vast majority” of those circulating this content, at over 83 per cent. “The fight is the point,” he said. “Trying to create a level of discord is the point, because it reduces the cohesion of societies and therefore reduces the threat posed by those societies.”

“People often ask, do you think this makes a difference or do you think this has an impact?” he added.
