La Grange Park’s Village Board has begun discussions about relaxing the Fire Department’s rule for hiring only Village residents.
Village staff, including Fire Chief Dean Maggos, prepared a staff memo suggesting that the Village’s rules be changed to allow people from parts of La Grange, Brookfield, Western Springs, Westchester, and Broadview to be part of the Village’s recruiting area. The idea was discussed at the Sept. 12 Village Board Meeting.“The staff memo pretty much explains the situation,” Maggos told the Board. “We have discussed it for years … but we never moved on it.
The proposed plan would expand the boundaries North to Cermak Road, East to Prairie Avenue in Brookfield, South to 47th Avenue in La Grange, and East to Gilbert Avenue in Western Springs. Lyons requires their on-call firefighters to live within 5 miles of the village; Riverside mandates 1.5 miles; Western Springs requires that recruits live within village boundaries or in an adjacent town.
Zaura’s colleague, Karen Koncel agreed, noting that “We’re very lucky it has gone as long as far has with a paid, on-call fire department … I’m in full support of this.”
