Residents rally to help East Side adult daycare center owner shut down because of COVID

Our Place Adult Day Care Center, which relocated to 3455 Martin Luther King Dr. in 2003, gave East Side families and caregivers a respite and adults an opportunity to socialize. But when COVID-19 forced the community into isolation, friends said rising costs, need for additional staff members and taxing duties hampered Richardson’s efforts to keep the building.

A community activist, she spent some of her downtime registering relatives and friends for pop-up vaccination clinics in the area. Now, tenants, friends and neighbors are hosting a fundraiser to help her maintain and restore the building that shut down because of the pandemic. On Saturday, supporters will host “An Afternoon with Mama Lynda” from 5 to 7 p.m. at the daycare center.“It’s not out of character for them,” Richardson, 69, said of those coming to her aid. “It makes me feel good.”

Admission is $15. The event will feature African drumming, storyteller Brother Mondrea and spoken word artist Supreme Lioness. Proceeds will benefit the restoration and upkeep of the one-story building. Aundar Ma’at owns and manages the MAAT bookstore and Kwanza Market that are open at the location on Saturdays. A friend of Richardson’s for more than 30 years, he said though the day care center will not reopen, the focus is to keep the building in service to the community, especially youth, as she desires.
