Sean Murray plays a pompous and philandering actor in Noël Coward's semi-autobigraphical 1942 comedy
If it’s true that Noël Coward wrote “Present Laughter” in only six days, it had to be because he was having so much fun he couldn’t stop. Coward also played the starring role of emoting, hedonistic actor Garry Essendine when his drawing-room comedy opened in Blackpool, England, in 1942. So began audiences joining in on the fun.
Obviously relishing this juiciest of parts, Murray is a tireless, even likable Essendine, despite Coward’s scarcely disguised version of himself being vainglorious and rather a cad. In a poetic role reversal, Reynolds is directing Murray, who directed her eight years ago at Cygnet in both Coward’s “Hay Fever” and “The Vortex.” The two are simpatico when it comes to Coward, mutually appreciative of his fluidity of language and flair.
It all starts simply — if not innocently — when 21-year-old Daphne Stillington emerges from a spare room in borrowed pajamas. This comes as no surprise to the household staff: the spiritualism-believing housekeeper Miss Erickson and valet Fred . Even more accustomed to morning discoveries like this one is Essendine’s sardonic secretary, Monica .
In this snappy jousting of words and egos, everyone in the cast has a license to overplay. As it should be. This skilled cast, impeccably costumed by Elisa Benzoni and under Reynolds’ inspired direction, makes “Present Laughter” a veritable playground of the privileged.
