Musical based on 1982 film is making its first visit to San Diego this week, presented by Broadway San Diego
It’s been 40 years since “Tootsie” premiered in movie theaters, and this week, “Tootsie: The Comedy Musical” made its local premiere in a touring production playing through Sunday at the San Diego Civic Theatre.
Instead of Michael landing a job in a soap opera, he’s a Broadway actor, and the script is full of inside jokes and tributes to the world of musical theater. One neurotic actress sings a mind-bendingly fast patter song about the trauma of auditioning, and one scene known as “Ron Carlisle’s Dance” parodies the most clichéd steps in Broadway choreography .Drew Becker as Michael and Ashley Alexandra as Julie in “Tootsie: The Comedy Musical.
As Michael/Dorothy, Drew Becker pulls off a challenging feat, both playing and singing in different registers as a man and a woman. Becker is considerably taller and much bigger physically than the original Dorothy, the 5-foot-6-inch Dustin Hoffman, but he carries himself with gentle poise and grace. William Ivey Long’s creatively constructed costumes also help Becker make the transformation, as well as the casting of several male ensemble members who are well over 6 feet tall.
Lukas James Miller makes an entertaining transformation as Max, the dimwitted Broadway hunk who falls, inexplicably, for Dorothy. Payton Reilly masters her character Sandy’s difficult patter songs but her screaming throughout the show feels excessively shrill.
