The film begins and ends with single mother Elaine . At one point, when she and her not-so-slowly changing son Martin are separated by a locked door, the camera remains firmly on her side. The film also skips over several significant moments between Martin and his paternal grandparents and uncle, whom Elaine has sought out in desperation over what to do about her son’s violent outbursts.
