The venue hosts a free open house April 9 and stages its first musical event April 14 with a performance of 'Don Giovanni.'
Each of the three balconies has a different front, due to the way sound waves diffuse and collect according to their location within a room; the overall idea is to provide the sound and feel of a much larger space. The orchestra pit can accommodate up to 70 musicians, but part of the pit floor can be raised for performances with a smaller ensemble, thus allowing more seating in the hall.
Arranging seats on an incline also helps make the theater feel cozier, explains Scott Pfeiffer, a partner with Chicago-based consulting firm Threshold Acoustics. “One of the really nice things is that when you have rows and rows of seats, you can't really pick faces out,” he says, “but the moment you lift them a little bit above the rest, then the performer can see faces to perform to and have that sense of connection with their audience.
Although “Don Giovanni” will be the first fully public performance in the new facility, Brockman Hall opened quietly in the fall of 2020. Its larger practice rooms and rehearsal spaces allowed Shepherd School students to carry on with their studies with fewer disruptions than would have otherwise been possible during the pandemic, notes Loden.
“Instead of being really close and too intimate for safety, we were able to spread out,” he says. “It made a big difference in us being able to continue our programs as much as possible, but it still sucked.
“First and foremost, it's for the Shepherd School to figure out how to program and use, but it's also for Houston,” Loden says. “It’s also for the Rice campus, and I think there's going to be a lot of opportunity to bring people in.”Your weekly guide to Houston arts & entertainment.
