Playing in its first bowl game since 2014, Rice is looking to go out as a member of Conference USA with a victory. The series with Southern Miss is tied 6-6 and this will be the first meeting between the football programs not designated as a C-USA game. Southern Miss is a first-year member of the Sun Belt and playing in its first bowl in three years. Rice has won the past two meetings over the Golden Eagles, including a 24-19 decision last season in Houston. Under second-year coach Will Hall, the Golden Eagles’ best win was at Tulane 27-24 in late September.
This season, Louisiana was a common opponent. The Owls under fifth-year coach Mike Bloomgren defeated Louisiana 33-21. USM knocked off the Ragin’ Cajuns 39-24. As Rice plays in its first bowl since dominating Fresno State 30-6 in the 2014 Hawaii Bowl and comes in on a three-game losing streak, here are five things to watch:True freshman A.J. Padgett will be making just his second start at quarterback for Rice, which has started three different players at the position this season. Trey Lowe is expected to start his fourth straight game for Southern Miss.
