Grady Hudson, 25, was arrested after a May 2021 chase in North Richmond, where authorities located a pistol in his possession.

OAKLAND — A Bay Area man was sentenced last month to two years in federal prison in a case that stems from a May 2021 police chase in North Richmond, court records show.

Grady Hudson, 25, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, and will serve a three-year supervised release term after prison. The sentence was less than what both prosecutors and the defense requested, court records show. Hudson was arrested after leading deputies on a chase when they tried to pull him over for driving a BMW roughly 45 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone, according to the criminal complaint. Hudson eventually parked his car near an apartment building and ran,In an apology letter, Hudson wrote that “I wish it was done different,” now that he’s had a chance to reflect on the incident.

“I apologize to the courts and people for my … mistakes and hope you see I’m truly trying to change,” he wrote. Hudson’s attorney portrayed him as a severely traumatized young man who had been shot at several times in his life, starting when he was 15 years old. Prosecutors described him as a “documented gang member,” and asked for a four-year prison term. He wasn’t allowed to possess guns due to a prior conviction for robbing a repo man, court records show.
