Amazon’s Rings of Power season 2 has to leave the mystery box trope behind and focus more on Tolkein’s epic world for the good of the show.
Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 relied heavily on the mystery box trope, but this is something that must be dropped if season 2 is to match the success of the first. Many of the stories in The Rings of Power are quite compelling, as the series elaborates on the events of the Second Age. Most of these individuals and their actions will have echoes right down to the time of The Lord of the Rings, particularly those of Sauron, who will forge the nefarious One Ring.
The enduring mystery of Sauron’s identity managed to outshine almost all the other stories in season 1, including the one that focused on Durin and Elrond. This problem became even more acute once the story started to more fully explore the emerging bond and potential romance between Halbrand and Galadriel, with signs seeming to point to them potentially becoming a romantic couple.
In this case, The Rings of Power contained constant reminders of Halbrand's villainous potential. In one notable example, he seemed to feel particular rage toward the character of Adar, who claimed to have killed Sauron for his treatment of his fellow Orcs.
