Klay has no illusion she is saving the planet, but she wants to save this spot and its ecosystems. She hopes others will too. Wetlands are home to baby shrimp, crabs and fish. Wetlands and coastal prairie filter and slow water, and store carbon. They offer space for biodiversity. Klay wore a zebra-print dress on a June morning and offered a very different, but just as fervent golf cart tour. She grew up in the Florida Keys, she explained. Her dad was a shark biologist. Her husband is a NOAA biologist. Klay holds degrees in fine arts and marine biology.
