While teachers in Patton Elementary School District 133 are threatening a strike as contract talks continue, the head of the union said that a walkout is the last thing faculty want.
“Despite multiple bargaining sessions and much hard work, the district and the union have not been able to reach an agreement on several key issues,” Kunst said in a statement. “The board is committed to continuing to negotiate with the union but we need it to work with us to have an agreement that is financially responsible.”
She said that the district has had difficulty attracting and keeping teachers, and that the entry pay needs to be increased.The starting pay for a teacher with a bachelor’s degree is just under $40,000 annually, and for teachers coming in with a master’s in education the salary is $46,000. The board, according to Kunst, is proposing raises of 3.75% in the first two years of a four-year contract, and annual increases of 4% in the third and fourth years.
The union is seeking a salary increase of 8% in the first year followed by increases of 6% in the second and third years.
